Good question – and one you'll need the answer to when buying cartridges for your printer. Both ink cartridges and toner cartridges are used by printers to print text and images on to paper.

Ink cartridges, such as the ones featured on this page, work with inkjet printers and that’s the type of printer most people have at home. (Unless they do huge volumes of printing, in which case they may well own a laser toner printer.) The ink cartridge holds liquid ink which is used to print onto paper – and voila, you can print off your plane tickets, holiday bookings, the recipe for your favourite lemon drizzle cake (complete with picture of how the finished product should look) and letters of complaint to your electricity company about the sudden rise in your bills. The ink in the cartridges is known as a dye based ink that is made with solvents that dry very quicky under the heat of the printer, this is so that the colours don't merge and you get crisp quality prints on each page.

So if your inkjet printer has run out of juice, you’ll need to buy printer ink. Each printer manufacturer has a different type of ink cartridge some have a tank such as Epson ink cartridges and some use a different method such as HP ink cartridges but that’s all technical jargon, you can find more about that and the different models of inkjet printer on our blog which also has a great host of resources on which types of printer are good for different printing needs.

Here at, we aim to bring you the lowest prices for all types of ink and toner cartridges.

And just to finish off, here's some ideas for making your ink go further.

  • Make sure you print out at least once a week to stop the cartridge drying out.

  • Use Times New Roman, font size 12 for the bulk of your printing as you get more words on a page.

  • Use the draft or economy setting on your printer and print in black and white where possible.

  • Use the print friendly option where it is available as this gets rid of unnecessary text and graphics, or there are browsers add-ons which can do this for you.

  • If you are printing out letters or other reports you have written yourself, spell check and proof-read them as carefully as you can to avoid the need to print out multiple times.
